I Heart G&L aka Will You Be Mine G&L ASAT Classic in Clear Red

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

It is that time of year that owning a guitar really pays off for those off us that don’t actually make a living selling out stadiums and collecting checks from iTunes. A day that, although some would have you believe otherwise, a bow and arrow are not the most powerful weapon in order  to woo a Mr or Ms. Right or Right now, I am not judging.

I will not argue the idea of a little half naked dude running around with some wood and string and causing folks to fall in love, however I must protest that the construction of that wood and string was not in the shape of bow and arrow but it was indeed in fact a guitar. Think about it. What better tool to use to express the poetry of love then a guitar. I know that Hallmark sells more cards with this romantic idea of the naked dude with wings flying around shooting folks in the heart but we all know, deep down, that the concept of naked dude sitting in front of his favorite girl and busting out a G chord is more likely and point in fact I have seen this event many times in college. But that is another post.

Once you see the G&L ASAT Classic in Clear Red you will understand why I heart it so. And why it makes for a perfect tribute to our dear customers and readers as our Valentines day post and appreciation.

Guitar of the Day – G&L 30th Anniversary ASAT Classic

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Our guitar of the day is in an instant classic with 30 years of heritage behind it. A little history from the folks at G&L:

30 Years – The Pearl Anniversary

The official gemstone of the 30th anniversary is the pearl. In keeping with this tradition, the 30th Anniversary Collection brings together pearl aesthetic features to create a strikingly beautiful and sonically expressive series of instruments.

Pearls of Desire

In addition to the unique features, tone and craftsmanship shared with other G&L instruments made on Fender Avenue, all 30th Anniversary models are finished in custom-blended 30th Anniversary Pearl Frost on both the body and headstock face, with contrast provided by a rich Ebony fingerboard accented with white pearl position markers. The headstock rear carries the commemorative G&L 30th Anniversary marking.

The guitar models carry the pearl anniversary theme further with the addition of Schaller/G&L tuning keys fitted with pearlescent buttons, and the pickguards on the ASAT Classic, ASAT Special and Legacy are 3-ply pearlescent.

Relationship Building

The 30th Anniversary F-100 and Legacy mark the debut of the G&L DFS Vibrato, which builds on the success of G&L’s Dual-Fulcrum vibrato with the inclusion of Stainless Steel saddles and a Cold Rolled Steel bridge block, all CNC machined from solid billet materials.

Celebrate a Special Moment in History

G&L has established a special place in history, thanks to Leo’s brilliance, the experience and dedication of the G&L team, and to the passionate musicians all over the world who share the pioneering sprit of our founder. Be a part of the rich fabric of G&L history and let your hands, eyes and ears experience one of the truly spectacular G&L 30th Anniversary models.

Guitar of the Day – G&L George Fullerton Signature Model (Late 90′s)

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Our Guitar of the Day comes from our Pre-Owned inventory although the term Pre-Loved is applicable here as this guitar is as mint as they come. We proudly offer to you, the G&L George Fullerton Signature Model(Late 90′s).

The Fullerton is a tribute to George Fullerton’s work at Fender, Music Man, and G&L specifically his contributions to the Fender Stratocaster.  The Fullerton was originally designed as a ’57 Stratocaster clone, but this strict configuration quickly changed when a slab rosewood fingerboard was made an option.  Vintage narrow frets are standard on the model as well.  According to G&L researcher Paul Bechtoldt, the pickup design was based on the blueprints drawn by Mr. Fullerton in 1954 for the Fender Stratocaster.

NAMM 2010 Update – G&L is a Real Whipper Snapper…

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

And I don’t mean some young kid running across the front lawn of old man McGee up the street. Although the G&L Whipper Snapper may thumb it’s just as easy at adult authority. It is a G&L’s virgin run into building an amp that partners with their line of electrics and gives a voice to those all ready amazing instruments. The G&L Whipper Snapper is a Hand-wired all tube amplifier that is sure to become a crown jewel for G&L.

Based on a late 1950’s tweed amplifier comes the definitive evolution of a classic. G&L’s own Whipper Snapper. The G&L Whipper Snapper is a medium-powered amplifier capable of producing a wide range of clean and overdriven tones with just the tweak of four controls. This vintage design has been modified to accommodate today’s player’s needs, for a portable yet flexible amplifier making it right at home in almost any playing situation, from practice to rehearsals to recording and live performances.

The Whipper Snapper is an all tube 18 watt hand-wired amplifier coupled with a 12” Jensen® P-12Q speaker, a duet of 6V6 output tubes, two 12AX7 preamp tubes, a 5Y3GT rectifier tube and loaded into a solid pine cabinet for warmth and unmatched dynamics.

Output: 18 watts

Speaker: One 12 inch, Alnico-Magnet, Jensen® P-12Q speaker (8 ohm)

Channels: One with High and Low inputs to accommodate both single-coil and humbuckered instruments.

Features:

lower-gain sound, if desired • 5Y3GT rectifier tube provides natural compression or “sag” • Jewel lamp power indicator • Leather strap handle • Made in USA

Tube Complement: 2-12AX7, 2-6V6, 1-5Y3

NAMM 2010 Update – G&L’s First Ever Amplifier and Effects Pedals

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Fullerton, Calif., January 14, 2010 – G&L Musical Instruments is pleased to introduce two new guitar effects pedals, the “Double Barrel” and the “Buckshot”, and the all-tube combo guitar amp called the “Whipper Snapper” at the NAMM show (booth #4690).

The Double Barrel (MSRP $215) is a variable-boost pedal which offers up to 30dB of clean boost, with Gain control and variable Lo and Hi controls which enable the player to restrict lows from becoming boomy and highs from getting too bright. The Buckshot (MSRP $199) is a natural overdrive pedal with Gain, Tone and Volume controls, and is designed to enhance an amplifier’s tonal identity rather than mask it. Both pedals will be available in March and feature black Bakelite knobs, military-grade PCBs, 1% tolerance resistors, true-hardwire bypass, hand-wired potentiometers, jacks and switches, as well as a five-year limited warranty.

The Whipper Snapper (MSRP $1999) is a medium-powered all-tube combo amp capable of producing a wide range of clean and overdriven tones. Available in April, the Whipper Snapper is based on a late 1950s 5E3 circuit. G&L has modified this classic design to accommodate the needs of today’s players looking for a portable yet flexible amp. The Whipper Snapper is right at home in almost any situation, from practice and rehearsals to recording and live performances.

The G&L name is synonymous with quality and tone, and the made-in-the-USA Whipper Snapper continues that legacy by sporting premium components. It delivers with its modified 5E3 circuit hand-wired on a vintage-type eyelet board, supporting a pair of J&J 12AX7 preamp tubes (may be substituted with 12AT7 for lower-gain sound), GZ34 rectifier tube which provides natural compression or “sag”, and a pair of J&J 6V6 output tubes. Making the most of the sonic possibilities are treble and bass knobs plus volume with pull-bright feature, while superb tone emanates from the Whipper Snapper’s 12″ Jensen P-12Q speaker, loaded into a solid pine finger-jointed cabinet for warmth and unmatched dynamics.
